Repurposed and Refinished Gun Cabinet

Hi everyone. I have been working the last several weeks on transforming a Thrift Store gun cabinet into a curio cabinet. It was a lot of work, but so worth it. I used Chalk Paint with clear soft wax, and love using it.

Here are the before, during and after photos.

And here are the "after" photos.

  1. How did you remove the gun rack shelf from the inside?

  2. Hi Alex. The piece on the back of the cabinet was glued, so I used a putty knife and carefully worked it loose until it came off. Then sanded the back panel smooth. The bottom, base part, where the butt of the gun goes, was easy. There was a thin strip of finishing wood on the right and left sides. Again I used a putty knife to remove them. Then I measured and cut a single piece of wood to cover the entire bottom. No need to glue or pin nail, it isn't going to come out. And no need for any finishing strips around the sides. It is much easier to paint the interior first, and paint the bottom board prior to inserting it in the bottom. Hope this helps. Please let me know if you have more questions.

  3. Alex- ps: I did try filling the bottom cut outs and had very poor success. The wood filler took forever to dry. That's when I abandoned that idea and decided it would be a whole lot easier to just cut one piece of wood to cover the bottom. Plus it looks better.
